The ongoing 'Blow of Zolfaqar' wargames in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman waters is unique in terms of using missiles and the scope of the geographical area, said spokesman of the maneuver on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Admiral Habib Sayyari said in this southern port city that the number and diversity of new weapons, torpedoes and missiles used in the wargames was remarkable compared to the previous maneuvers.

The new stage of the 'Blow of Zolfaqar' wargames began Friday evening in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman waters involving units of the Iranian Navy.

It is being carried out on a 250,000-sq-meter area in five phases.

The ongoing event is a part of the massive 'Blow of Zolfaqar' wargames which began last Saturday in the Sistan-Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran and then continued in other western and southwestern areas.

Zolfaqar is the name of the sword of Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam of the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), and a symbol of power and courage for Shi'ite Muslims.

The spokesman added that different types of coast-to-sea, surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missiles were successfully tested in the second day of the wargames in the region.

All the tested missiles were manufactured or improved by the domestic experts of Iran's Defense Ministry, said the admiral.

He added that more than 1,500 well-equipped special teams were also participating in this stage of the maneuvers which are aimed at ensuring the army's preparedness and defense capabilities as well as testing newly produced weapons.
