The Iranian armed forces tested surface-to-surface missiles on the second stage of the massive wargames code-named `Blow of Zolfaqar' along border areas of this southeastern province Sunday morning.

Zolfaqar, the sword of Imam Ali (AS), the first Imam of the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), is a symbol of power and courage for Shi'ite Muslims.

The wargames spokesman Brigadier General Kiumars Heidari told IRNA that the surface-to-surface Iranian-made Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) missiles as well as surface-to-water missiles were test fired from a far distance, demonstrating their remarkable range and high precision.

He added that various units including intelligence sites as well as electronic and anti-electronic units demonstrated their potentials at this stage of the maneuver.

The massive wargames, the first stage of which was launched in southeastern Iran on Saturday, will be conducted in several stages in 16 provinces in southern, southwestern and western parts of the country during the coming days.

The Havanirooz (air-support for Army) chinook helicopters, unmanned planes, parachutists, electronic war units and special forces are participating in the maneuver.

General Heidari said that the wargames are aimed at improving and updating the Army's tactics.
