MP: UNSC's draft resolution on Iran includes neither sanction nor threat

Tehran, July 22, IRNA
Iran-Resolution-UNSC
Member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Reza Talaie-Nik said here Saturday that the draft resolution released by United Nations Security Council on Iran's nuclear issue includes neither sanction nor threat.

The draft of UNSC resolution on Iran was issued at the United Nations Headquarters on Saturday.

He told IRNA that the resolution is centered on `suspension of enrichment' and said that most likely there is no need to raise sanction or threat against Iran before the country's response to Europe's package of proposal is announced.

The MP underlined that the draft resolution is `beyond legal frameworks' and said, "China and Russia as well as Europe and the US to some extent) have had some challenge over the content of this draft resolution.

"China, Russia and to some extent Europe have concern over the consequences of imposing sanctions against Iran. That is why despite their repeated agreement within the D8 and 5+1 groups, China and Russia have not yet declared their approval for issuing the UNSC resolution on Iran."
Turning to the challenges among UNSC member states on Iran's nuclear issue, he said that one of these challenges concerns not having received Iran's response to Europe's proposal.

"China, Russia and Europe -- except Britain -- and the US avoid issuing a hasty resolution including sanction or threat against Iran before receiving the country's response to Europe's proposal.

"The resistance of China and Russia against the US and Britain will make the resolution do away with any threat or sanction and rather be limited to underlining the UN nuclear watchdog's attempt and suspension of enrichment," said the MP.

"Israel's military setback and failure of US policies on the war in Lebanon have made China, Russia and to some extent Europe be cautious about exerting pressure on Iran.

"The heavy defeat of Israeli forces against Hizbollah along with the extensive anti-US rallies across the region and world and the possible extension of the current crisis within the region have forced China, Russia and part of Europe to be more careful about pressurizing Iran.

Talaie-Nik said that the release of UNSC draft resolution on Iran before receiving the country's final response to Europe's proposal takes place in line with political and psychological operations aiming to paralyze Iran and prepare the grounds for exertion of further pressure.

"The US and its allies intend to make instrumental use of Iran's nuclear issue to overlook the country's inalienable minimum right to access nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and pave the way for more intervention in the regional developments," he concluded.
