Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here Sunday said Iran was ready to settle the nuclear issue through negotiations.

Commenting on a statement issued by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ali Larijani, on Thursday, Asefi said, "The (SNSC) statement was important. The statement reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to resolve the issue of its nuclear case through talks."

"The statement also said Tehran welcomes a package of incentives proposed by European Union or Group 5+1 and regards it as a basic and a prelude for negotiations," he said.

"So this basic core will be grown up in talks to meet the sides' satisfaction," he said.

On June 6, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana offered a package of incentives on behalf of the UN Security Council's five permanent members -- Russia, China, US, UK and France -- plus Germany to Iran to settle the dispute over Iranian nuclear program.

"Iran was supposed to receive the package and give its response after it carries out study on the package. We are surprised how the European side chose another path while holding no negotiations," the spokesman said, a reference to new waves of debate among the Group 5+1 in absence of a reply from Iran promised to be worked out by August 22.

Asefi added, "We believe the European partners should enter talks after the committees end their work (on the proposed package) and Iran gives its reply."

"In that case, the two parties will reach a result which will satisfy them."

Asefi said, "If the other party chooses a path but negotiations, the Islamic Republic of Iran will also change its path.

"We select our path based on approach of the our partners." He added, "Every harsh measure will be followed by a proportionate reaction."
