Iran Postpones Nuclear Talks With EU Until Next Week
05 July 2006
Iranian officials say their country's top nuclear negotiator has postponed talks with the European Union until next week.
The talks were planned for Wednesday, but the officials say Ali Larijani will not be going to Brussels as had been scheduled.
Larijani and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana were to discuss a Western incentives package aimed at persuading Tehran to stop enriching uranium.
Larijani said Tuesday Iranian officials are seriously considering the package. But he said they want to discuss what they call "ambiguities" in the proposal.
Earlier this week, a U.S. official said Western powers will consider punitive action against Iran if it has not agreed by July 12 to suspend uranium enrichment.
The United States and many of its European allies believe Iran is planning to build nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
