Iran may answer Iran-6 proposals by end June - FM Lavrov

RIA Novosti

07/06/2006 14:06 MOSCOW, June 7 (RIA Novosti) - Tehran may give an answer to proposals advanced by a group of nations trying to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem by the end of the month, Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday.

"No timeframe has been set, but we are hoping that by the end of the month Iran will be able to give an answer to the proposals that it has been given," Sergei Lavrov told journalists.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, Tuesday handed over to Iran a package of incentives drafted by the Iran-6 negotiators aimed at persuading the Islamic Republic to halt its controversial uranium-enrichment program.

Lavrov said the Iran 6 had proposed suspending discussions of a draft UN Security Council resolution on Iran if Tehran re-imposed a moratorium on uranium enrichment as part of the incentive package.

Iran said it would resume talks with the West after examining the package.

"The proposals contain a number of positive aspects, but some issues need clarification," an Iranian television channel quoted Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's National Security Council, as saying.

Lavrov also said Russia would support UN Security Council sanctions against Iran if the Islamic Republic is found to be in breach of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
