Iran willl not give up its right to nuclear research: Elham

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 22, IRNA
Iran's right to access nuclear fuel technology or carry out nuclear-related research is non-negotiable, government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said here Monday.

Speaking to domestic and foreign reporters at his weekly press briefing, Elham said Iran backed efforts to defend peace and to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction.

"Tehran is ready for any cooperation or negotiation leading to global nuclear disarmament," stressed the spokesman.

Referring to the upcoming meeting of the 5+1 Group in London on Wednesday, the official urged participants (representatives from the UN five permanent members and Germany) in the meeting to "take into consideration Iran's legitimate rights in the nuclear field" when making decisions on the nuclear issue.

Stressing that each and every Iranian was pressing for the right to acquire civilian nuclear energy, he said this was "not a matter the government can surrender."
"Based on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) even the right to enrich uranium is non-negotiable," Elham said, reiterating that Iran's nuclear program was for peaceful purposes and Tehran supports the idea of making the world free from nuclear weapons.

However, added the spokesman, "Iran believes that access to peaceful nuclear technology is an indisputable and irreversible right of the nation."
He said that Iranians can make their choice in this free country and Iranians are a "politically mature nation."
