Negotiation only solution, says Asefi

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 14, IRNA
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said here Sunday negotiation was the only solution to resolve the Iran nuclear case.

Asefi made the remark at his weekly press conference in response to a question on Iran's stance on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's proposal on the necessity of holding talks between the five permanent members of the UN Security Council along with Germany and Iran.

The five UNSC permanent members and Germany are set to meet in London on Friday to go over Europe's new initiatives on Iran.

"If the opposite side thinks it will gain any results through intimidation and pressure, it is making a big mistake.

"Iran will hold talks with different countries. If due attention is paid to Russian foreign minister's proposal, (it will be clarified) he also believes in talks and avoidance from ways other than negotiation."
He added talks based on mutual respect and observance of each other's rights are desirable, the spokesman said.

With respect to Asefi's positive attitude towards Lavrov's proposal, he was asked about US presence in the Group 5+1 negotiating team, in reply to which he said, "The response is clear. There is an opportunity (to hold talks), if they do not use the language of threat and an inappropriate literature and if they adopt a respectful approach.

"Nevertheless, these arrangements should be prepared." 2327/1414
