Iran urges Annan, UNSC to stop US threats against Iran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New York, May 1, IRNA
Iranian Ambassador to United Nations Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday urged United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and UN Security Council to stop Washington's illegal and impudent threats against Iran.

In a letter to Annan, Zarif drew attention of UN secretary general and the Security Council to illegitimate threats of US officials against Iran taking advantage of a variety of illusive pretexts.

"US officials are impudently threatening Iran with use of force in blatant contravention of international law and the basic principles of United Nations Charter," Zarif said.

"US threats against Iran have found new dimension to the extent that US dailies are publishing stories about possibility of aggression on Iran and whether the US would use nuclear arms against Iran and the US officials do not reject such stories," the letter said.

The letter quoted George W. Bush as saying in a press conference on April 18, 2006, in response to a question whether US would initiate nuclear attack against Iran, that "All options are on the table." Zarif said that US threat to initiate nuclear attack against Iran has also jeopardized the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

He called for immediate action by UN Security Council to stop US threats against Iran and said that failure of the body to stop US from violating the international law and United Nations Charter in the past has emboldened the US officials to say, "The option of nuclear attack on Iran is on the table."
