Asefi: Placing Iran's nuclear case on IAEA agenda, sole option

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said Sunday that the only way to end the current situation is to place Iran's nuclear dossier on the agenda of the UN nuclear watchdog.

Speaking to domestic and foreign reporters at his weekly briefing session, he said that reporting the nuclear issue to the UN Security Council (UNSC) is actually a humiliation for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Asefi said that the UNSC does not have the capability to examine the case, given that it is not specialized in the field.

Turning to the outlook of Russia, China, the Non-Aligned Movement member states and Islamic countries on the matter and their belief that it should be examined by the agency, he said that even the latest report of the IAEA Chief Mohamed ElBaradei underlines that this needs to be solved through time.

In response to a question whether Iran intends to transfer its nuclear technology to other countries such as Sudan, he dismissed such a possibility.

He clarified that Iran has declared its readiness to transfer science and modern technology to Islamic countries.

About ElBaradei's report, he said that it could have been more positive, adding that neither does it satisfy the US, given it underlines that there is no deviation from peaceful path in Iran's nuclear activities.

He added that if the UN nuclear watchdog deals with the issue professionally, there is no cause for concern.

"The world community is not concerned about Iran's nuclear case, but it is the US which is escalating tension on the issue," concluded the spokesman.
