Iran's defense of its rights is a defense for all signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), an official said here Wednesday.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Saeed Jalili added that Iran's insistence on defending its rights would revive the NPT.

Pointing to Iran's joining the group of countries possessing nuclear technology, as announced by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday, Jalili said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran is among few countries enjoying nuclear technology and fuel cycle.

"Nuclear technology has been indigenized by young Iranian scientists and experts."
He stressed, "Nuclear technology is among the countries' needs and factors of development, progress and welfare of different societies."
The official added, "The 20-Year Development Vision Plan envisions generation of 20,000 MW of electricity from nuclear technology within the next 20 years.

"Nuclear technology has been followed up and come to fruition in the country as a means of achieving sustainable development.

"All countries opposed to Iran's access to fuel cycle and nuclear technology are themselves on top of owners of nuclear weapons."
He stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has not been after building weapons of mass destruction due to its religious values.

"Peace and tranquility based on justice are the main theme of Iran's foreign policy.

"Tehran is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the NPT and has fulfilled its commitments," Jalili said, adding, "Fuel supply from other countries is irrational, uneconomical and runs counter to the NPT."
He stated, "Iran is a democratic country in the region which enjoys great human, mineral and scientific resources."
He said confidence-building is a two-way process, stressing, "Iran has always adopted an attitude based on peace and played an important role in establishing peace in the region."
