The electricity industry of the country will expand with the capability achieved in uranium enrichment, Energy Minister Parviz Fattah said here Wednesday.

Two new nuclear power plants in addition to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant will be constructed this year, noted the minister, who is accompanying the president in his current visit of this northeastern province.

According to a law passed by Majlis, 18 more nuclear power plants required to supply 20,000 megawatts of electricity in line with the country's 20-year `Vision Plan' are to be established.

"There are no more prospects of a blackout in the country in the coming summer as 1,700 megawatts of electricity shall have been added to the country's electricity supply network," the energy minister added.

He said construction of new refineries is also envisioned by his ministry as well as implementation of the project to transfer water from the Friendship Dam to the holy city of Mashhad.

The Friendship Dam is located on Hariroud river on the joint border of Iran and Turkmenistan. It was constructed under a joint venture project between the two states at a cost of USD 168 million and was inaugurated last year.
