Mottaki: Powerful countries at UNSC dominate decisions

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in Geneva on Friday that the legally non-binding statement issued by the UN Security Council Wednesday evening proved powerful countries have the say in the Council.

"The legally non-binding statement of the UN Security Council (chaired by Argentine Ambassador Cesar Mayoral) on Iran showed that Council decisions are dictated by powerful countries," said Mottaki in an address delivered before the Geneva Security Policy Center in which he deplored the statement.

Mottaki said the discussions and conclusion arrived at the UN Security Council on Iran's nuclear case was politcally motivated and exceeded its legal status.

"The statement only made the situation worse," he said.

"The UN Security Council's non-binding statement makes it difficult to proceed with the current investigation (on the case) as well as with efforts to find a solution agreeable to both sides." Political representatives at UN Headquarters in Generva, Swiss political officials and a number of security experts were
among those present at the meeting.

Mottaki said Iran's nuclear programs were fully transparent and that all questions in this respect should be raised before the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He stressed: "We will continue cooperation with the agency within the framework of the safeguards regime but will not bow to discrimination and injustice."
The legally non-binding statement of the UN Security Council on Iran's peaceful nuclear program was issued Wednesday evening.

The statement calls on Iran to stop uranium enrichment within 30 days and for IAEA chief Mohamed ElBardei to give a report within the same period on Iran's compliance with the IAEA Board of Governors' instruction.

The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the statement to be "politically motivated" and claims it was issued under pressure by a few states.

Iran has repeatedly voiced its readiness to remove ambiguities concerning its nuclear programs within the IAEA framework.
