German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed once again support for Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy following a meeting with the UN Security Council's five permanent foreign ministers and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Berlin on Thursday.

"Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy is not questioned but it has to create confidence that its nuclear program is solely of a peaceful character," Steinmeier said during a joint press conference with the UN Security Council's P5 foreign ministers and Solana.

Iran has repeatedly said its program is entirely for peaceful purposes following lengthy and intrusive inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the past years.

Steinmeier said the west's stance on the Iranian nuclear row remained "unchanged which means a diplomatic solution".

The German official vowed that if Tehran decides to resume nuclear talks, these would be conducted in a "constructive spirit".
