China said Thursday it hoped the UN Security Council's non-binding statement concerning Iran would help shore up the authority of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"China hopes the approval of the statement will help to strengthen the authority and role of the IAEA," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang in his weekly press briefing here on Thursday.

He said there was still room to solve the Iranian nuclear standoff diplomatically following a non-binding UN Security Council statement calling on Tehran to halt its nuclear drive.

"We believe that in the current situation there is still room to solve the issue through diplomatic negotiation," said Qin.

"We hope the relevant parties will remain calm and patient and create a sound atmosphere for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue."
The UN Security Council issued a non-binding statement on Iran on Wednesday.

The US says the statement fails to address its demand.
