Russian FM: Iran, Russia resume talks on nuclear stands off

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Moscow, March 13, IRNA
Iran-Russia-Nuclear
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Monday that the Iranian officials have called for continued talks with Moscow on peaceful nuclear cooperation between the two countries and predicted that the talks would be resumed in the near future.

Speaking to reporters, he declined to comment on Iran's refusal to enrich uranium in Russian soil and said Iran has made various contradictory statements on this issue.

Russian offer was made in a bid to find an amicable solution to the issue and was never tied with Iran's acceptance or non-acceptance, he said.

He expressed disappointed on Iran's recent stance on establishment of a joint center in Russian soil to enrich uranium for the country.

Iran has not cooperated with those seeking to find an amicable solution to the issue, he said.

The two countries have held three round of negotiations on joint uranium enrichment plan and have reached agreement on its general principles.

Russia has declared that the implementation of the plan depends on Iran's acceptance of IAEA requests such as suspension of uranium enrichment activities and approval of additional protocol to NPT.

Iran has already declared that if its nuclear dossier is reported to the UN Security Council, the Russian proposal would be considered 'null and void'.

International experts believe that uranium enrichment and conducting nuclear research studies within the IAEA framework are among Iran's legitimate rights and reporting Iran's nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council is against international norms which would make the country's persist in gaining its legitimate right.
