US outlook on Iran's nuke issue imposed on IAEA: Jalali

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, March 9, IRNA
Iran-Nuclear-Jalali
Rapporteur of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali here Thursday said that unfortunately the US outlook on Iran's nuclear issue has been imposed upon the United Nations nuclear watchdog as a dominant approach, though other countries do not have the same view.

Speaking to reporters in reaction to the developments in the country's nuclear dossier and the outcome of the recent seasonal meetings of the Board of Governors, he added that the US seems to continue its unlawful and political approach by exerting pressure upon Iran.

Despite diplomatic efforts to solve Iran's nuclear issue through negotiations, the dossier and relevant outlook of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei were reported to the UN Security Council on Wednesday night under the US pressure after three days of talks.

The decision to take such a move was taken without issuing any resolution, voting or reaching consensus.

"Though Iran is entitled to access nuclear energy as a member of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the US has made no mention of research in Iran's nuclear case," said Jalali.

The NPT regulations, in particular articles 2 and 4, stress the right of all countries to access nuclear energy and conduct research in the field.

Concerning the procedure for continuation of Iran's nuclear trend in the agency, he said that several options are likely to be taken up.

About the way ElBaradei's report will be presented to the UNSC members, he noted that this may take place in a private session attended by the council members and IAEA chief, without the presence of reporters from other countries.

"As another option, the agency chief may be asked to submit his written report to the Security Council members," he added.

Jalali believes that the US-Russia talks resulted in the boycott of Moscow's proposed plan and reflection of Iran's nuclear research by the US.

"Although, according to ElBaradei's reports, no deviation by Iran has been detected in its peaceful nuclear activities and it has not ever violated the relevant laws, the dossier is still being treated as a political case under the influence of the US and the three EU members," he added.

The official noted that the US still attempts to have the nuclear issue assessed by the UNSC to pursue its policies by pretending that the nuclear activities in Iran are ambiguous.

Stressing that Iran will cooperate with the IAEA as a NPT member, Jalali said "In spite of the unfair approach of the UN nuclear watchdog towards our country, we will continue our collaboration with it."
