Iran met all its obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the world is, therefore, asking why it was reported to the United Nations Security Council, Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel said on Monday.

Haddad-Adel, who is currently on an eight-day tour of Latin and South American states, made the remarks during a meeting with Uruguay's President Tabare Vazquez.

"It is not right that the IAEA should stand in the way of Iran's pursuit of its interests. The Iranian people, considering their government's reasons for pursuing a nuclear program, have rallied behind the decision to pursue peaceful nuclear activities," he said.

He welcomed the call for expansion of economic and cultural ties between Tehran and Montevideo, and warned the international community of the growing threat of unilateralism.

"This threat has recently been focused on Iran but other developing states will also be targeted," he added.

Pointing to the attitude of Muslims towards followers of other religions, the speaker said, "Muslims respect the followers of other religions. The Iranian nation values friendship and kind relations with them."
Assessing Iran's ties with Uruguay as "important," he praised Montevideo's logical and moderate stances on issues raised at the international level.

Haddad-Adel described relations between the two countries as "good and positive," saying Iran favors expansion of relations with developing countries as distinguished from so-called superpowers.

"We believe no state is a superpower per se but through cooperation and interaction with other states it acquires the status of superpower in the international fora."
He expressed the hope the groundwork would be laid for a global system where justice is enforced, saying "without justice there can be no real peace and this applies to governments which are not beholden to superpowers."
Vazquez, for his part, said his country supports a multi-polar world and totally opposes a unipolar world order.

He said it is the belief of his country, much like Iran, that like-minded countries around the world can establish a new order by expanding cooperation.

He said Uruguay's foreign policies are grounded on self- determination, non-interference in the affairs of other states and respect for international rights.

The president then called for further bolstering of trade and economic ties with Iran, adding that relations can also be bolstered in the political and cultural fields.

He said there were no geographical barriers to enhanced ties among countries.

He affirmed the right of any country to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as well as conduct research in this regard because of what he said was the impending depletion of oil resources.
