Iran Negotiators Say No Preconditions To Moscow Talks
20 February 2006 -- An Iranian negotiator in Moscow today for key nuclear talks said a compromise Russian proposal was not linked to international demands for Iran to resume a moratorium on uranium enrichment.
Ali Hosseinitash, a deputy head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said there were no preconditions to the Moscow talks.
Russia is offering to enrich uranium for Iranian nuclear power plants on Russian soil to allay international fears Tehran may be seeking to produce nuclear weapons if enrichment is carried out in Iran.
Russia had previously said that its proposal was conditional on Iran giving up all enrichment activities.
Iran last week resumed small-scale enrichment activities after a break of more than 2 years.
The Moscow talks are widely seen as a last chance for Iran to avoid being referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions over its nuclear program.
