Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad-Javad Zarif announced that though the US has dealt all his cards including economic and political pressures against Iran, the Islamic Republic's great scientific and technological achievements are the cause of concern in the West.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution on Saturday evening, which was attended by a number of Iranian expatriates residing in New York City, he added that today the Iranians' progress is not limited to nuclear field but that remarkable success has been scored in all scientific domains.
"Such progress has been materialized despite the attempts of the world powers to deprive Iran of access to advanced technologies.
"Turning to Iran as a great authority under the current sensitive conditions, he said that the pressures exerted against Iran by some Western countries actually reveal their concern about Iran's growing authority on the world scene," added Zarif.
He noted that as a country once known to be incongruous to the ruling systems of the region, today Iran is becoming more authoritative at the regional level, even in spite of the present trend of export of democracy to the Middle East.
"According to the US President George Bush, there is no more sanction to be imposed against Iran and in other words the US administration has already dealt all its cards to this end.
"However, despite the sanctions, the progress of Iranian youth in scientific and technological domains have resulted in eye-catching achievements which account for the growing worries of the West," he added.
Zarif said that the challenges currently underway are directed against Iran's potentials rather than its policies and ongoing talks.
He noted that any country intending to present itself and submit new proposals on international relations will definitely face such challenges on the part of the world powers.
"To enter the new play scene on the international arena, going through crises and challenges is an unavoidable requirement. However, this should be accomplished with the minimum expenses.
"Today, some powers have launched their highly objective-oriented attempts to prevent Iran's access to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes," he noted.
Zarif said that ever since Iran attempted to access nuclear technology, it encountered the opposition of the same powers.
"Today, various nations with their diverse outlooks are active in the US. They neither let the national interests of their motherlands be damaged, nor the values, efforts and progress of their countries be subject to pressure.
"What took place in the Western community after the blasphemy against the sacred Muslim Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) was an example of people's wide participation in counteracting any insult and disrespect for their values," said the official.
He referred to the Iranian expatriates residing in the US as an authoritative, intellectual and rich community, in which Iran and all Iranians should take pride.
"As Iranians, they should be sensitive to safeguarding the national interests of their homeland and defend it, irrespective of the ruling system and any possible discord.
"They can voice their say through lawful channels and thus prevent the achievements of their Iranian compatriot youth from being overlooked as far as protection of national interests is concerned," said the envoy.
He called upon the Iranian expatriates to use their influence for dissemination of information and revealing the truth.
"What is taking place in the nuclear sector has nothing to do with either Iran's ruling system and its present political situation or the country's relation with the West.
"What is currently underway is merely the formation and establishment of an authoritative Iran, which is unacceptable to certain countries," he added.
Addressing all the Iranian expatriates residing in the US, he noted that such an authoritative Iran is the main cause of worry to some of the Western states.
"You are bound to safeguard the interests of your country, irrespective of political outlooks," said Zarif.
