FM: Iran's foreign policy based on detente, confidence building, promotion of global peace

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki here Saturday said that Iran's foreign policy is based on the principle of detente, confidence building, negotiation, mutual understanding, promotion of the spirit of cooperation, peace and coexistence at regional and international level.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Eighth meeting of Iran-Tunisia Commission, he added that promotion and stability of this strategic policy is in the interest of the country, region and the world.
"Expansion of ties with other countries based upon mutual respect, rejection of any hegemony and emphasis on institutionalizing international laws, efforts to reduce tension at regional and international levels as well as further convergence and unity among Muslim states and the Non-Aligned Movement member states are some of the priorities of our foreign policy.
"About 40 cooperation documents, including agreements, memoranda of understanding and plans of action have so far been signed by the two countries, which can provide proper legal and lawful rounds for collaboration in various economic, trade, social and cultural fields if the required conditions are provided for their implementation.
"To materialize implementation of the goals set by these documents and their provisions requires precise executive planning, formation of commissions charged with pursuing them and removing any possible obstacles," he added.
Mottaki noted once the draft on trade tariffs, whose preliminary assessment has been almost completed by both sides, is signed and the current economic problems are solved, exchanges in various industrial, development, textile and foodstuff will expand.
"Besides, this will facilitate joint investment in economic and trade sectors to bolster mutual ties," he added.
The minister said that good and acceptable results are expected to be gained at the session in making joint chamber of commerce active, bolstering cooperation in the domain of trade, industries, communication and information technology, social affairs, education and environment.
Meanwhile, Tunisian Foreign Minister Abdelwaheb Abdallah said that strong friendly ties exist between Iran and Tunisia.
Turning to the reformist movement in his country which was founded by President Zein al-Abedin bin Ali, he said that the reforms in Tunisia had a high impact upon the economic sector.
"Tunisia's foreign policy has been founded upon moderation and we believe that international commitments and laws should be respected.
"Besides, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries is one of the stable policies of Tunisia, based on which good relations have been established with world states," he added.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the eighth joint commission meeting, Abdallah said that Iran and Tunisia share close outlooks and that the political will of the leaders of both countries are based on further expansion of ties.
The Tunisian minister said that at the end of the meeting, a few memoranda of understanding will be inked by the two sides to support cultural and trade exchanges.
