UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed reports of a resumption of nuclear talks between Iran and Russia on Feb 20, chief UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Friday night.
Dujarric quoted Annan as saying Russia, as a permanent, veto-wielding member of the UN, plays a crucial role in bringing the two sides to the negotiating table.
Annan is confident Iran would use the talks to take further steps to build confidence on its peaceful nuclear program before the scheduled March meeting of the IAEA, he said.
The secretary-general, he added, remained hopeful Iran would act positively to the resolutions adopted by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The spokesman noted that the time had come for governments which are signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to help resolve the current crisis in the interest of regional and international security and to preserve the integrity of the safeguards regime.
