Russia, France Urge Iran To Stop Enrichment Activities

14 February 2006 -- Russia and France today reiterated their call for Iran to cease all work linked with the enrichment and processing of nuclear fuel.

In a joint statement released after French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin visited the Kremlin, the two countries recognized Iran's right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program for energy and said that Russia's proposal to enrich uranium for Iran was an opportunity to resolve the problem.

Earlier, de Villepin told Russian President Vladimir Putin that France and Russia should work more closely together to resolve international problems such as the Iranian nuclear crisis and tensions in the Middle East.

The Russian president said the talks were an opportunity to "synchronize watches" on a number of international issues.
