Iran-Vaeidi-Nuclear
Deputy head of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) for International Affairs, Javad Vaeidi, here Tuesday said that given more than 1,600 person/day inspections already conducted at Iran's nuclear installations, three inspections have taken place per day on the average.
Speaking at a seminar dubbed `Nuclear Know-how: Today's Strategy, Tomorrow's Need', he noted that the UN nuclear watchdog inspectors have inspected Iran's nuclear sites without prior notice more than 26 times in the past two years.
Vaeidi added that Iran cooperated in arranging such inspections mainly with the purpose of confidence building.
"Unfortunately, after Iran's efforts to this end, the atmosphere of non-confidence against Iran was actually aggravated by the European states and the US.
"Non-satisfied with these confidence building measures, the West called upon Iran to suspend uranium enrichment in Natanz temporarily, which was accepted by Iran. Meanwhile, it was pointed out by the West that such a voluntary measure is non-binding," he added.
Stressing that the West was not even content with this confidence building step, he noted that at this point the Westerners announced that Iran should completely stop its enrichment process which was accepted by Iran.
"After having responded to their calls, we called upon them to present a proper solution, given Iran's intention to continue its peaceful nuclear activities in accordance with international laws.
"We follow the win-win route. We will win by continuing our peaceful nuclear activities, while they will win by making sure that we will not divert from peaceful activities. At this stage we have asked them to submit their proposal," added the SNSC official.
Vaeidi regretted Europe's announcement at this stage that Iran should suspend its nuclear fuel cycle completely for the purpose of confidence building, which is a win-lose game.
He noted, "This is in conflict with the agreements formerly reached on the issue and in line with the spirit of the previous agreements, we ended part of our voluntary suspension. At the same time, we declared our readiness for holding talks.
"On the contrary, according to the resolution approved by Europe in September 2005, we were accused of not complying with our commitments, which was against the international agreements." The official stressed that this should have been reflected as a report by the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, based on the inspections conducted at Iran's nuclear installations.
"However, such a report has never been presented by the IAEA inspectors nor by Elbaradei," concluded Vaeidi.
