IAEA Meeting on Iran Postponed Until Saturday
03 February 2006
The United Nations nuclear watchdog agency has postponed until Saturday a meeting to decide whether to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear program.
European and U.S. delegates to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna are working behind the scenes to broaden support for a draft resolution to report Iran to the Security Council for possible sanctions.
A vote initially was scheduled for Friday.
Some of the countries on the 35-member governing board - reported to be Cuba, Venezuela and Syria - oppose the draft resolution. However, analysts predict that a majority of the agency's governing board will vote in favor of the resolution.
U.S. and European officials accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, and has threatened to reduce cooperation with the U.N. if it is reported to the Security Council.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
