US envoy to IAEA claims Iran referral to UNSC, a diplomatic act

The US Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Gregory Schulte claimed in Vienna Wednesday evening that Iran's referral to the United Nations Security Council is a diplomatic way.

Speaking to reports a day ahead of the emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, Schulte claimed he was confident that Iran will be sent to the UNSC.

He made the claim in defiance of different stances announced on Wednesday by various states playing a role in Iran's nuclear case.

His claims are made while European states replaced the option of "reporting" Iran to the council instead of "referring" it to the body.

Meanwhile, Russia, China and the Non-Aligned Movement's members of the IAEA are opposed to the idea of referring or dealing with Iran's nuclear case without negotiations within the IAEA framework.

Showing a hasty reaction, Schulte told reporters that Iran's referral to the UNSC was in line with the diplomatic measures in dealing with the case.

He also argued that the referral should take place based on the IAEA laws and regulations.

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said on Wednesday that Tehran would act based on a "second scenario" if the scenario of negotiation now being pursued by Iran was rejected.

He stressed that the second scenario would be "more practical." Iran's Foreign Ministry also warned big countries against politicizing Iran's nuclear case and stressed in a recent statement that political motives can only make the current standoff "more complicated."
Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei stressed that holding negotiations would be the best way to find a solution for Iran's nuclear case.
