Gov't obliged to resume uranium enrichment if Iran referred to UNSC: Majlis speaker

Tehran, Feb 1, IRNA
Iran-Nuclear-Majlis
Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel said on Wednesday that if Iran's nuclear case is referred to the United Nations Security Council, the government would be obliged to resume uranium enrichment activities.

Addressing a Majlis open session today, the speaker said that referring Iran to the UNSC by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would be considered a "great weakness" for the international body.

"This would be a shame for an international body (e.i. IAEA) to be used as a tool by a number of countries producing and proliferating weapons of mass destruction, in order to condemn another state or refer it to the Security Council," Haddad-Adel argued.

He added "We explicitly announce here that the government is obliged to implement Majlis approval and resume uranium enrichment activities if the situation remains unchanged."
Iran's Majlis unanimously passed a bill on November 20, 2005, obliging the government to suspend all its voluntary steps taken in the past three years for confidence-building if the IAEA Board of Governors opts to refer Iran's nuclear case to the UNSC.

The five security council veto-wielding nations along with Germany (5+1) held a meeting in London on Tuesday and reportedly agreed that the IAEA's governing board should refer Iran's nuclear case to the UNSC during their two-day emergency meeting to be held in Vienna from February 2-3.

Haddad Adel expressed hope that before it is too late, the legitimate rights of the Iranian nation (for acquiring nuclear technology for peaceful purposes) should be recognized through "productive talks so that the IAEA could maintain its credibility." Meanwhile, touching upon the 27th victory anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran called as Ten Day Dawn, the speaker said "today we are witnessing the effects of Iran's Islamic Revolution on different countries including Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Afghanistan."
Referring to the recent insult of the Swedish and Norwegian press to the Prophet of Islam (PBUH), the speaker said "Enemies must now that they cannot prevent the public awareness through ugly deeds such as desecration of sanctities and publishing insulting cartoons (of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)."
Cartoons caricaturing the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) in the Danish and Norwegian press provoked angry protests across the Muslim world.

Iran's Foreign Ministry too, summoned the Norwegian and Danish ambassadors to Tehran respectively, Ole Kristian and Christofer Gyllenstierna to express Tehran's strong protest against the insulting act and called for official apology of the two governments in this regard.
