Vice president: Iran calls for nuclear-weapons free region

First Vice President Parviz Davoodi said here Sunday that Iran by relying on its innovative scientists has attained high degree of scientific progress in the field of nuclear fuel cycle and for this reason it will by no means deprive itself of peaceful application of nuclear technology.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmad al-Khalifa.

"Iran's achievements in the field of nuclear technology would bring lots of benefits for the country and other regional states," he said adding that Iran seeks a region and a world free from nuclear weapons. He also termed the Zionist regime's nuclear arsenal as a source of insecurity and a serious threats to the whole region.

Formation of regional alliances in monetary, marketing and banking fields is vital, he said adding that the regional countries through collective cooperation and without reliance on foreigners could help expedite their political, economic and cultural development.

The Bahraini foreign minister, for his part, said that it is the legitimate right of Iran to benefit from peaceful use of nuclear energy and the country's progress in this field was a source of pride for all Muslim nations.

Highlighting Iran's significant position in the region, he called for further expansion of economic cooperation and consolidation of political ties between the two countries.

"We are optimistic about formation of a joint banking and financial system which would safeguard the interests of all peoples of the region," he said.
