Iran Says Russia, Other Countries To Help Enrich Uranium

28 January 2006 -- Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said today that his country and Russia have agreed to bring in other countries to participate in enriching uranium for Iran.

Mottaki did not say which countries would join Russia in helping Iran to enrich uranium. However, an Iranian delegation was recently in China discussing Russia's proposal for helping Iran with its nuclear program and at the same time ensuring that Iran does not try to produce fuel for nuclear weapons.

The United States and several countries in Europe have called for bringing Iran's nuclear program to the UN Security Council after the UN's nuclear watchdog -- the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -- cited Tehran's noncompliance in cooperating with the IAEA.

Iran maintains its nuclear development program is for peaceful purposes and that the country has the right to have nuclear technology.
