Iranian President: Tehran Will Continue Nuclear Efforts

13 January 2006 -- Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad says Iran will carry on with its nuclear program despite objections from the international community.

Ahmadinejad said today in Tehran that Iran is not frightened by threats from any country and would continue efforts to produce nuclear energy.

His comments came after British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the United Nations Security Council would consider sanctions if Tehran failed to comply with international demands.

Straw's Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki, said earlier that Iran would end inspections of its nuclear sites by the United Nations if it is referred to the Security Council.

The U.S. and European countries suspect Iran is covertly trying to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran denies this.
