EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner Monday expressed hope that a breakthrough could be achieved before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) ends its meeting on Iran's nuclear program later this week.
"We are still hopeful that the discussions until the IAEA Board meeting ends within the framework of this Board meeting will bring some substantial breakthrough," Ferrero-Waldner told reporters in Brussels Monday noon.
"I don't think it would be helpful in any case if the Iranians suspend the discussions because then it will be more difficult for the international community to go on.
"But I cannot say more because it is all now in the negotiating process," she added.
The Commissioner was replying to a question on yesterday's decision by the Iranian Majlis to oblige the government to suspend all the voluntary steps Iran has taken in the past three years for confidence-building if International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors opted to refer Iran's case to UN Security Council on November 24.
European Union Foreign Ministers meeting here Monday are to discuss Iran's nuclear program.
