Asefi regrets EU's glaring unawareness of Iran, int'l developments

Tehran, Nov 8, IRNA
Iran-Asefi-EU
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi here Tuesday expressed regret over what he called the European Union's (EU) glaring unawareness of developments in Iran and the world as a whole.

Foreign ministers of the EU, during a meeting in Brussels, Belgium on Monday, discussed the Union's relations with Iran and issued a statement calling for full suspension of all Iranian nuclear-related activities.

Asefi said the EU statement does not harmonize with current developments in Iran and the world.

"Despite the increasing crimes of the Zionist regime and the repeated, daily violations of human rights by this regime, the EU chooses to turn a blind eye as shown by its statement."
"World public opinion and Muslims in particular expect a more responsible attitude from European states in this regard," he said.

"If the EU wants its recommendations to be heard, it should set the example. The Union should take major strides to end discrimination, human rights violations, particularly violations of rights of religious minorities and Muslims, and mention measures it has taken in this regard in its statements.

"Europe's support for terrorist groups over the years is also censurable.

"The fight against these phenomena demands determination and an unbiased and honest attitude. Iran is a pioneer as well as a victim of terrorism and its contribution to the maintenance of stability and security in the region, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, is clear to all.

"Iran welcomes dialogue with other states on an equal footing based on respect and with no pre-conditions, and regards as unacceptable the interference and discriminatory approach of states, including in the field of human rights, and rejects them.

"The EU should know that Iran has succeeded in holding talks on different issues and various subjects. Talks to promote mutual interests should be held based on understanding and agreement." The spokesman further underlined Iran's inalienable right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, saying "Iran will not withdraw its right."
He called on the European Union to honor its previous commitments in this regard and said it should also officially recognize Iran's right and not be bigoted if the ground is to be paved for
understanding and progress."
