Iran-UN-Resolution
The Disarmament Committee of the United Nations General Assembly here Monday approved an Iran- proposed resolution to strengthen measures to implement nuclear disarmament and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The resolution, the text of which was first proposed by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a speech delivered at the United Nations General Assembly, was approved after four weeks of back-to-back consultations between members of the committee.
President Ahmadinejad, addressing the 60th UN General Assembly session, invited nuclear countries to adopt effective measures to implement nuclear disarmament and called on the assembly to follow up this important issue.
Seventy countries voted in favor of the resolution, 52 voted against and 22 abstained.
Western countries voted against the resolution but Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states firmly supported it.
It stressed the importance of implementing measures adopted in the 1995 and 2000 conferences and the NPT regulations by nuclear states.
According to the final document of the NPT review conference held in 2000, countries possessing nuclear weapons are urged to fully eliminate their atomic arsenals in compliance with nuclear disarmament.
The European Union, in a statement aiming to put a cover on its dual attitudes on nuclear issues, accepted the principles raised in the Iranian proposed resolution but said it opposed it due to Tehran's political goals.
The EU claimed the resolution would not be constructive under current political circumstances when Tehran's lack of commitment to the NPT is an issue on the agenda of the International atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
