Israel Calls for Iran's Expulsion from UN

27 October 2005

Israeli officials say Iran should be expelled from the United Nations, following comments made by Iran's president that Israel should be -  in his words -  "wiped off the map.

Israeli Vice Premier Shimon Peres says Iran should be expelled from the United Nations, following comments by the country's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Israel should be "wiped off the map." Iran's president made his comments at a conference called "The World without Zionism," where he also said any Muslim nation that recognizes Israel must be condemned.

The Jerusalem Post newspaper reports that Israel's United Nations Ambassador has been given instructions to take action to see how Iran can be removed from the world body. However, a foreign ministry spokesman said Thursday that was not Israel's official position.
