Russia says no reason to refer Iran to UNSC

Moscow, Oct 15, IRNA
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Saturday there was no reason to send Iran's nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was the only competent body to resolve the issue.
Addressing a joint press conference with the visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lavrov said that IAEA inspectors made regular visits to Iranian nuclear sites and present regular reports to the IAEA.
Hence, he concluded, there would be no reason to discuss the Iran nuclear issue in any other body except the IAEA.
Lavrov further said cooperation by Iran with the IAEA can help remove international concerns over the country's nuclear programs.
He said signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) should be able to exercise their right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes.
The Russian minister called for continuation of regular visits by IAEA inspectors.
Rice, who made a lightning visit to the Russian capital, said the two sides discussed the Iran nuclear issue, adding that referral of the case to the UN Security Council was an option but that she hoped negotiations would continue as another option available for resolving the issue.
The two ministers, during talks, stressed the importance of Iran's cooperation with the IAEA.
Rice and Lavrov said their countries held the common view that it was incumbent for Iran to implement the NPT.
