Iranian Diplomat Quits Nuclear Negotiating Team
5 October 2005 -- An Iranian diplomat has resigned as a member of the country's nuclear negotiating team.
Iran's state-run news agency, IRNA, reported that Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is ambassador to the United Nations, quit the team. The report did not say why.
Zarif is widely considered as a moderating influence over foreign policy and favours improving ties with the West.
Last month, the IAEA's board of governors passed a resolution saying Tehran is not in compliance with nuclear proliferation safeguards -- which could prompt the case to be sent to the UN Security Council.
