Iran-Editorial-9/11 /POL/ Iraq war casts a cloud over White House: Paper

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Aug 21, IRNA

A morning daily here Sunday questioned the US-led war against terror after the 2001 terrorist attacks which led to the US invasion of Iraq noting that it changed much of the world for the worse.

`Kayhan International' said, "Apart from the enormity of the events, the chain of reactions, more premeditated than spontaneous, that followed has plunged the world in a needless, new kind of violence."
Stressing that the war on terror launched in Iraq by the US has backfired in many respects, the editorial added, "The endless cycle of bombings, killings, kidnappings, torture and reprisals, has been a direct consequence of the acts of irresponsible extremists and unprincipled, inhuman entities."
The English-language paper said it believes the basic cause of the war against Iraq which was also "the progenitor of all this carnage and tragic developments," was "malice, born out of greed, that some superpowers bear towards Muslims".

The paper argued, "This war of choice was surely designed to achieve certain objectives, one of them being to use a conquered Iraq as a stepping stone to the realization of greater ambitions. It was also possibly meant to draw the al-Qaeda fighters into the exposed Iraqi terrain and take them on in the open spaces."
It further noted "While the danger of the U.S. becoming a harmful influence on countries with expansionist tendencies, is very real, the better part of the global community seems pretty disillusioned with Mr Bush's grand illusion of making - by force if need be - the Islamic world abandon its rights, beliefs and values, and take to American ways."
Kayhan International also said that given the situation stands at present, "the war has cast a cloud over the White House. Pressure is being put on President Bush Jr. to set a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.

"In light of these developments, the only logical course for the warmongers in Washington to pursue is to eradicate the root causes of terrorism. And everybody knows what they are! The U.S., having gone it alone in Iraq, has emerged the loser," stated the paper.

It added "Unilateralism on the Iraq issue has harmed the U.S.: it has lost its political morality, authority, prestige and standing. It is the loser in every respect."
