NAM group: EU resolution registration at IAEA unlawful

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Aug 11, IRNA
A diplomat from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors NAM group here Thursday dismissed the Europeans' measure to register their proposed resolution at the agency's secretariat as unusual and against its internal regulations.

He told IRNA this afternoon that while the three European states of Germany, France and Britain were discussing the contents of the resolution with NAM group, in an unusual approach they finalized it without acquiring the approval of the NAM member states and submitted it to the UN watchdog.

"In order to be finalized, the resolution needs to be approved unanimously by all 35 Board of Governors member states. Unless it is revised, members of NAM group will not approve it," he added.

The NAM members threatened that if Europeans do not include the views of NAM group in the resolution, the group will take on to draw up a separate resolution and register it at the agency's secretariat.

Turning to the expected negotiations between the NAM and EU members, he hoped that they would lead to a positive result and that the emergency meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will reconvene.

Meanwhile, he assessed participation of China's representative in NAM group's meetings for the first time as a significant development and said that the Chinese support of NAM has consolidated the group's status at the Board of Governors.

China's representative to IAEA on Wednesday called for attending NAM meetings with the agency's Board of Governors, which was accepted by the group.

Under the present conditions, the presence of Chinese
representative to the Board of Governments meetings as a NAM member is assessed as a crucial development.
