Iran To Respond To New EU Proposals Within Two Days
5 August 2005 -- Iran says it will respond within two days to new European proposals aimed at ending a long-running standoff over its nuclear program. In comments made on Iran's state television, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Tehran would give itself "one or two days" to examine the European proposals and would then make a decision on its next move.
Earlier today, Britain, France, and Germany -- negotiating on behalf of the EU -- presented Iran with a new set of proposals. Reports said the EU had offered Iran broader help with its civilian nuclear activities in return for ending its suspected nuclear-weapons program.
Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only and that it is determined to resume some nuclear activities under international supervision.
