Iran Vows To Resume Nuclear Work

31 July 2005 -- Iran said today it would definitely resume some sensitive nuclear-fuel activities on 1 August after the European Union failed to meet Tehran's deadline for proposals to break a diplomatic impasse.

Iranian nuclear officials and sources told news agencies that as Iran did not receive the EU proposal, it will "naturally" resume work at the Isfahan nuclear plant.

Tehran had set a deadline of 31 August for the EU to submit plans for incentives it would provide in return for Iran's indefinite suspension of uranium enrichment, nuclear-fuel reprocessing, and related activities.

But the British Foreign Office said the EU -- represented by Britain, France, and Germany -- had informed Iran only that detailed proposals would be delivered in a week. It also urged Iran to avoid any "unnecessary and damaging step" related to nuclear activities.

The United States suspects Iran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its program is peaceful and that it only wants nuclear power to generate electricity.
