The European Union has asked Malaysia to help mediate in the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, Saturday's edition of the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana as saying on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in the Laotian capital Vientiane.
Solana confirmed to the German newspaper that the EU delegation at the ASEAN meeting submitted Friday a letter to Malaysia in which the Europeans asked Iran "to keep still".
"Such a relevant letter has been handed over this (Friday) morning," Solana said.
The EU hopes that Malaysia which enjoys close ties with Iran, can convince Tehran not to make any new announcements on its nuclear program as it would endanger the latest EU 3 (France, Germany, Britain) incentive package.
Tehran has set Monday as a deadline for the EU proposal which is aimed at finally settling the Iranian nuclear row.
