Head of Disarmament and International Security Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hamid Ba'idi-nejad said here Monday that production and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction are among the major security threats in today's world.
Speaking in the second day of the International Conference on UN Reforms, he said that all countries across the globe want the nuclear countries to never take advantage of their nuke weapons against other countries.
The access of five permanent members of the UN Security Council who enjoy veto rights to nuclear power is in contradiction with international rules, he said.
Refusal to sign up the NPT is among other challenges facing the nuclear safeguard system, he said, adding that Israel has rejected the treaty and many Middle Eastern countries believe that accepting the NPT additional protocol depends on Israel's behavior towards the nuclear safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Many NPT members have not yet inked the safeguard agreement and many developing countries still have doubts over whether they would be entitled to benefit from peaceful application of nuclear technology, he said.
On nuclear fuel cycle, he said unfortunately producing countries do not feel themselves duty-bound to provide fuel for other countries, he concluded.
Russia, Britain, France, Sweden, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia, India, Greece, Zimbabwe, Finland, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Turkey are among the countries attending the two-day conference.
