In order to examine Washington's reaction to presidential polls, we should take a brief look at the background of Iran-US relations.

A Brief Look at Background of Iran-US relations:
Public protests and general strikes gained momentum in Iran in 1978 as the nation decided to change political structure of the country from monarchical to republican system.

The Islamic Revolution led by Imam Khomeini culminated on ebruary 11, 1979 replacing the US-backed regime of deposed Shah with a new governing system called the Islamic Republic.

The United States which declares itself as an advocate of democracy, could not hide its anger in the past quarter-of-century at Iran's national resolve to dismiss US-backed puppet regime and replace it with an independent government.

US and Islamic Revolution:
Just one after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the US officials resorted to use such degrading terminology against the Iranian nation as terrorist, rogue nation and lawless.

The US officials embarked on an extensive smear propaganda campaign against Iran and enforced economic sanctions on Iran in addition to freezing Iranian assets and resorting to military coup.

US Embassy Involvement in Abortive Military Coup in 1979 The military tribunal investigating those involved in an abortive military coup found out that US Embassy in Tehran wanted to orchestrate the same scenario that they followed in 1953 which toppled nationalist government of the then prime minister Mohammad Mossadeq and reinstated Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who had fled the country then in power.

The late Imam Khomeini ordered young students to go to US Embassy to bring out papers to substantiate US intervention in Iran's internal affairs and its plan to engineer a new military coup in 1979.

The students took over the US Embassy and founded numerous documents proving that US diplomats were involved in conspiring a military coup which had been foiled one month earlier.

At the same time, the US granted asylum to the deposed Shah which aroused public outcry in Iran over the US action deemed as an affront to the nation.

The students wanted to exchange the US diplomats with deposed Shah. Some 444 days passed and Washington did not meet the demand of the students and at last they freed them.

The US could never respect national sovereignty rights of the Iranian nation and encouraged Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to invade Iran.

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visited Baghdad to reaffirm Washington's support for Iraq in its military offensive against Iran.

Saddam had made clear that the military operation was aimed at oppling Iranian newly-established government.

After the young Iranian soldiers managed to defend the country in the face of invasion of Iraq's armed-to-the-teeth army, the US launched a diplomatic campaign against Iran through extensive media apparatus.

Presidential Election and US President's plea to Iranians:
US President George W. Bush has made several statements about composition of political structure of Iran and on the eve of presidential election, he appealed to Iranians not to take part in the polls.

The Iranian nation responded to President Bush with its extensive turnout. About 30 million people went to the polls in the first round and 28 million in the run-off election.

The nation elected Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential polls with 17 million votes in his favor.

The US propaganda machine has unleashed a new wave of campaign against the Iranian president-elect accusing him of having played a role in US Embassy affair in Tehran.

It indicated that the US does not accord the least respect to democracy.

Europeans Toeing US Line against Iran:
More ridiculous thing is that some European officials think that they should not fall behind the new wave of fabricated charges against the Iranian president-elect with Austrian officials following suit by implicating the president-elect in terrorist attack which took place against some Kurdish leaders in Austria in 1989.

Let's see the ridiculous reaction the US and Europe have shown to the Iranian people's rejection of George Bush's plea to them not to go to polls.
