Iran-Election-President
President Mohammad Khatami said on Saturday that the president-elect is expected to respect democracy as great achievement of the Islamic Revolution.
He said in a statement after announcement of Interior Ministry about victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the run-off election that the next president must respect what is experienced in Iran regardless of outcome of the polls.
"The next president should undertake heavy responsibility of being responsive to the demands of the people and safeguard dire achievement of the Islamic Revolution which has been religious democracy," President Khatami said.
He said that the political party which has won the election should not hesitate to abide by religious democracy and respect it as the historical goal of the Iranian nation.
President Khatami said that presidential election should be interpreted as paving the zigzag way in the direction to democracy for a country which had been under colony and despotism for centuries and broke the heavy chains of agony.
"I congratulate you, the noble Iranian nation, on the massive presence in the polls and the president-elect on honor of getting public confidence to undertake the heavy responsibility."
"Regardless of outcome of the election, the next president should know that people have elected him for certain demands to be fulfilled and it is the fruit of democracy. Our responsibility is to prepare the ground for free election and respect rights of the people as the owners of the country and the Islamic Revolution," President Khatami said.
President Khatami said that freedom, constitutional rights of the people, justice and preserving independence and international status of the country are the lofty aspirations of the Islamic Revolution.
