Arrests Reported In Iranian Election Violations

By Bill Samii

23 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's official news agency says 104 cases of alleged violations during Iran's presidential election on 17 June are being reviewed and that suspects were detained in 26 of the cases.

IRNA news agency says among those detained was a "known member of a military organization" who the agency said had tarnished the image of one of the candidates in the election.

It was not clear when the detentions were made. There were few details on the alleged violations but the agency said some were linked to the distribution of CDs and other material.

The 17 June first round failed to produce a clear winner. Former President Ayatollah Ali-Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, a moderate conservative, will face the hard-line Tehran Mayor Mahmud Ahmadinejad in a runoff tomorrow.

At least two of the seven candidates who ran in the first round have alleged widespread vote rigging.
