Armed forces banned from electoral activities; says senior officer

Brigadier General Alireza Afshar, deputy commander of the Armed Forces Main Headquarters (AFMH) for cultural affairs and defensive promotions, stressed here Sunday that no armed force will participate in executive and supervisory affairs of the upcoming elections.
He added the armed forces would maintain the security of elections if they are asked to.
According to a report by the AFMH, Afshari stated that members of Basij (volunteer forces) are regarded as "armed forces" only if they are on duty, adding their political activity is forbidden unless they are off duty and without the uniform and title of Basij.
He further wanted presidential candidates not to speak about matters related to the armed forces.
