Solana seeks clarification from Iran on enrichment program

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Brussels, May 12, IRNA
EU-Iran-Solana
European Union High Representative for a common foreign and security policy Javier Solana and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and the UK have sent a letter to the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani seeking clarification on the country's enrichment activity.

"If the announcement that has been made by Iran that some kind of restarting related activity with enrichment is true, the first thing that we would like to do is to call the meeting in Vienna to analyze the situation, discuss it with the (IAEA) Director Mohammad ElBaradei and draw the conclusions," Solana told reporters in Brussels Thursday evening.

"But it is too early for me to say exactly what is going to happen," he said.

The EU foreign policy chief said "The only thing that is true is that we have sent a letter to them, our Iranian friends, telling them what would be our position if they breach the agreement that was signed in Paris in November."
"I don't want to sound dramatic at this point of time. We will see how things evolve. You know elections are going to take place (in Iran) in the coming months. Let's see how the situation evolves in the future."
Solana said he did not know if Iran has received a letter from the Vienna-based IAEA.

"We communicated very clearly to our Iranian interlocutors that will have consequences if they decide to do something that for us is a breach of the November agreements," he warned.

Solana made the statements to the press following talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Germany, France and the UK are leading an EU diplomatic initiative with Iran over its nuclear program.
