RIA Novosti
TEHRAN, April 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Iran are assessing a new potential of enhanced bilateral cooperation in the context of their own interests and regional interests.
"The assessment of a new bilateral-cooperation potential and the formalizing of the experience of consultations as regards various international issues between Moscow and Tehran can guarantee observance of both countries' interests, as well as the creation of regional stability-and-security conditions," Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Harrazi noted in his statement. Harrazi's statement was issued by the national Foreign Ministry's press service.
Kamal Harrazi negotiated with Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Alekseyev (who arrived on a working visit in Tehran) on April 11.
The Iranian Foreign Minister noted the need for substantial joint efforts aiming to solve the Caspian problem. "Among other things, the Caspian Sea's legal status must be formalized. Moreover, all five littoral countries must reach consensus," Harrazi's statement reads in part.
According to Harrazi, "regional and international cooperation between Russia, Iran, China and India in the context of the projected UN reform will serve as legal grounds for enhancing regional and global peace and stability."
For his own part, Alekseyev noted the important role of Moscow and Tehran in ensuring Caucasian and Central Asian peace and tranquility. Alekseyev also confirmed the need for expanded bilateral contacts and consultations on a broad range of issues of mutual interest.
