Bioethics-Congress-Khatami
President Mohammad Khatami here on Saturday urged all governments and nations to oppose production and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
Addressing the first International Congress on Bioethics, he stressed that opposing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by those who produce such kinds of armaments, covertly or overtly, has no ethical value.
"Although, weapons of mass destruction are produced with the order of politicians and militarymen, they are unfortunately tested and produced in laboratories of world scientists", the Iranian president regretted.
Today, the world is seriously threatened by production, proliferation and stockpiling of the weapons of mass destruction, he reiterated.
The International Congress on Bioethics opened here on Saturday with a keynote speech by President Khatami.
The congress is co-sponsored by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Iran's Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the Health Ministry as well as the National Genetics Engineering, Biology and Technology Research Center, and Tehran University's Ethics and Medical History Research Organization.
Some 600 university professors, researchers and scientists from 18 countries are attending the three-day congress.
Some 92 articles will be read out by Iranian and foreign experts during the three-day congress.
UNESCO Director General K. Matsuura also addressed the opening session of the congress.
Exchange of scientific and research experiences is the main objective of the congress.
