Iran Reaffirms Intention to Pursue Nuclear Electricity
An Iranian official has told a Paris conference on atomic energy that the generation of nuclear electricity remains Tehran's prime nuclear priority. The vice president of Iran's nuclear agency, Mohammad Saeedi, said Tuesday "the people and government of Iran" would pursue the peaceful use of nuclear technology, despite what he called "all imposed restrictions and difficulties." His comments come a day before nuclear talks between Iran and the European trio of Britain, France and Germany are to resume in Paris. The Europeans, backed by the United States, want to persuade Iran to permanently abandon uranium enrichment, which can be used to fuel nuclear weapons. So far Iran has resisted, saying its enrichment activities are for peaceful purposes, and Western concerns that Tehran intends to build nuclear weapons are wrong.
